VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND SKILLS ACQUISITION CENTRE IGBOOYE CELEBRATE HER END-OF-THE-YEAR/EXHIBITION PROGRAM IN A GRAND STYLE.

The Vocational Training and Skills Acquisition Centre Igbooye under the Lagos State Government Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation celebrate her end-of-the-year program and maiden edition of Exhibition Program of service provided by the Centre. 


The exhibition program held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at Vocational Training and Skills Acquisition Centre premises Igbooye, Eredo, Epe, Lagos State was as a directive of the Commissioner Of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada in all the nineteen vocational training centers in Lagos State.

HRM Oba M. G. Onakoya (rep) by Chief Onakoya Gbemi, Chief Hassan More, Hon. Soliu Adeniyi (rep) former Chairman Eredo LCDA, Mr. Adetola Olukoya Mrs. Modinat Sulaimon, Pastor Torila, Mr Teslim Oluwaseunayofunmi representing CNI Nigeria, Pastor Ajayi, to mention few were at the First Edition of Exhibition Program of Vocational Training and Skills Acquisition Centre Premises Igbooye.


In the opening speech of the Principal of the vocational center, Mrs. Elehibiri A. Cecilia, she acknowledge and appreciate the commissioner for the privilege given to the center in order to showcase the services provided by the center and students. She also appreciate the King of the community, HRM Oba Michael Gbadebo Onakoya, Baales, Chiefs, youths and the entire clan of Igbooye community and its environs for their accommodation and support given to the school since inspection. Mrs. Elehibiri made known to the general public the intention of Lagos State Government in creation of vocational training and skills acquisition canters in strategic locations in Lagos State. ”Government can’t create jobs for everyone, vocational training and skills acquisition brings about self-employment, it reduces unemployment and the stress of seeking for jobs”, she said.

She emphasis more that skill acquisition programs promotes economy growth and also highlighted some of the skill acquisition programs the center offers which includes; tailoring, photography computer, art & textiles, catering service, barbing and many more.

She encourages the youths, those that are just graduating from secondary school, school drop outs and tertiary certificate holders who are yet to secure good job, to seize the golden opportunity in making themselves relevant, self-reliance and employers of labour in the society and nation as a whole. 

Mrs. Elehibiri seek for support of the community and its clan to help in creating more awareness about the vocational center. ”My passionate appeal goes to community leaders who has the capacity to sponsor and empower candidates to raise to this and make the center more attractive to the populist” she added. 

If the outgoing students can be empowered, like giving or providing them with tool and materials in which they will be using to practice what they’ve learnt, this will encourage other youth to come to the center in order to learn and acquire skills.

The numbers of students that enroll for skill acquisition program at the center reduces every year due to the hike in the cost of transportation from Epe to Igbooye which is a thousand naira, toe and fro. The first set of graduating students were three hundred and fifteen (315), while the second set were two hundred twenty-five (225) and this year graduating students were seventy-five (75).

Most of the youth don’t want to acquire skills, they prefer to do things that can bring quick money, like riding tricycles and motor-cycle (okada). If the youths are properly guided, they are resources to be developed, with proper monitoring, cancelling and motivation, they can significantly improve the nation economy.

Speaking at the event, Chief Samuel Onakoya who is representing the King of the community, thank the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for situating the Skill Acquisition Center in their community. He appreciate the principal and the instructors of the center on the good work they are doing in the community and buttress on the important of vocational skills. 

Mr. Adetola Olukoya, who is one of the special guest also encourages the youth to acquire skilled knowledge in order not to put their eggs in a basket. “The certificate obtain from the center is recognized and can be used to get jobs in reputable organizations in the state” he said. He also encouraged the teachers not to limit themselves to the number of program the center provided, they should try to expand it to other lucrative programs


During the program, eight outgoing grandaunts were empowered from the barbing and hairdressing departments, some of the beneficiaries are Miss. Oyedotun Itunnu, Mr. Oloko Boluwatife and Miss. Awene Justina
