By Teslim Sultan
Members of the League of Epe Youth and Students Association LEYOSA and the National Youth Council of Nigeria NYCN Eredo Chapter on Saturday 20th of April 2024  came out in mass to advocate for the youth to engage in skilled acquisition programs which Lagos State Government has made free for all the resident of the state.
The duo organizations storm the streets of Poka, Mojoda, Odo-Ayan, Odo-gbawojo and Odo-shiwola communities by engaging the youth on the need to have at least a skilled job in having a brighter future.
This advocacy started at around 7:15 am to meet the targeted audience which is the youth. This first phase of the program was at Ibeju and Ibeju-Lekki last Saturday while the last phase will be at Epe Central and Ikosi-ejinrin, next Saturday simultaneously.
Speaking with Amb. Kadri Abiola Morgan the Coordinator of LEYOSA  said LEYOSA and NYCN come together to advocate for youth empowerment and development because looking at the state of the nation, it's not about the white-collar job but the skills one has to better the community.
The organization is encouraging the youths of the Epe Division to venture into skilled acquisition programs instead of waiting for white-collar jobs that may not come in time.
He added that the outreach is meant for all the community in Epe Division to inform the youth what the Government has put in place to better the life of the youths.
Com. Adekunle Oluwaseyifunmi Abiodun (Coordinator NYCN Eredo Chapter) said the collaboration with LEYOSA in sensitization the general public on the need for literacy in vocational skill acquisition. One of the major problems of the youth is idleness, due to unemployment of the educated ones and lack of skills. The two organizations thought it needful that that youth should use the vocational training centres the State Government has provided so that every youth can be self-sufficient and self-employed.
Com. Adekunle appreciate the state government for providing the skill acquisition centres all over Lagos and providing stable instructors which is one of the basic needs for the centres to run effectively,  he also advises the local government chairman of Eredo LCDA, the community leaders, CDAs, youth leaders and other community youth group to encourage youth on the need to acquire skill knowledge as they are the ones close to the grassroots.
Sulaimon Adekunle Ogundipe (SSA Eredo LCDA) encourage the youths to embrace the skill acquisition programs as it will be a source of income for them and not everything the government will provide. "Government can't employ all, there are need for us to also create one. Acquiring skilled knowledge will reduce cybercrime and drug addiction in our communities
A resident of the Okemagba community Ms. Ayodeji Sikemi said "The innovation is a great one if only our youths are willing to venture into skill acquisition programs and it will reduce unemployment and idleness in our communities and country at large." Government, mostly at the local government level should do follow up on these programs so that youth will not relent.
Arakunrin Oluwaseunayofunmi a resident who met the youth during advocacy added that the state government always support students from the acquisition skill centre with loans if they apply for them. "Most of our youth want quick money forgetting the fact that what one doesn't labour for does not last" he added
