Lagos State Prepares for Local Government Elections: LASIEC Unveils Guidelines

By Sultan

In a development that was both surprising and anticipated by many in the political landscape, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially released the much-awaited guidelines for the upcoming local government elections in the state.

This announcement comes just days after the Commission refuted earlier reports concerning proposed guidelines. While those rumors indicated that campaign activities would kick off on April 25, the newly released official timetable sets the campaign start date for April 18, running until July 9.

LASIEC has slated the elections for July 12, 2025, giving political parties an extensive 18 weeks to prepare thoroughly for the electoral process. Tope Ojo, the Head of Public Affairs at LASIEC, revealed that in the event of any need for reruns, supplementary elections are planned for July 19.

The release of the official Notice of Elections marks the beginning of electoral activities across the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State. As part of the preparation, LASIEC has scheduled a meeting with all registered political parties for Tuesday, with the Election Guidelines set to be published on Thursday, April 17.

According to the electoral timetable, parties will have a window from June 18 to June 25 for the substitution of candidates, should the need arise. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and inclusive election, ensuring that all aspirants are well-prepared for this significant civic event.

With the countdown to the elections officially underway, parties are encouraged to gear up and engage actively in the democratic process.
