Historic Appointment: Alara of Ilara, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, Named 6th Chancellor of Lagos State University
The Lagos State Government has announced the appointment of His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, Telade IV, the Alara of Ilara-Epe, as the 6th Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU).
The announcement was formally approved by the Governor of Lagos State and Visitor to the University, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. The decision was conveyed in an official statement signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr. Emmanuel A. Fanu, dated Sunday, February 15, 2026. The statement was released through the university’s official communication channels.
Appointment in Line with University Law
According to the statement, the appointment was made pursuant to the provisions of the Lagos State University Law of 2004 (as amended), which empowers the Visitor to appoint the Chancellor of the institution. Oba Ogunsanwo’s appointment follows the successful completion of the tenure of Gbolahan Elias, SAN, who served as the 5th Chancellor of the university.
Professor Elias was commended by the university community for his meritorious service and steadfast commitment to upholding the dignity and integrity of the office throughout his tenure.
Five-Year Renewable Term
Oba Ogunsanwo’s tenure as Chancellor will run for a single term of five years, effective from Friday, February 13, 2026. The appointment is renewable for one additional term, in accordance with the governing law of the institution.
As Chancellor, the revered monarch is expected to serve as the ceremonial head of the university, presiding over convocations and conferring degrees, while also providing moral authority and strategic guidance to support the institution’s growth and development.

The Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University have congratulated Oba Ogunsanwo on his appointment, expressing strong confidence in his capacity to provide impactful leadership.
